Puzzled, she touched his immobile face, fingers tracing the grain of the wood. ‘A kiss,’ said Mogget sleepily.  ‘Actually, just a breath would do.  But you have to start kissing someone sometime, I suppose.”  -- page 214, Sabriel

ABOUT

THE SERIES
The Old Kingdom Series, sometimes called the Abhorsen series, was written by Garth Nix. The books in the series, in order, are: Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen.  Both Sabriel and Touchstone appear in all three novels, however, they are the main characters in Sabriel, while in Lirael and Abhorsen they do not appear as frequently.

THE BOOK
Sabriel is about the daughter of the Abhorsen (a person who puts the dead to rest). When the Abhorsen, her father, goes missing and sends Sabriel his bells and sword, she goes out to find him. Along the way, she meets Mogget, a powerful being trapped in servitude to the Abhorsen as a white cat with green eyes and a sarcastic wit. She also frees a man who calls himself ‘Touchstone’, who admits to having done something terrible and foolish, but not what exactly.  With their help, she finds her father, but by now has entered the fight against the terrible villain responsible for her father’s disappearance.  She must face him to prevent chaos and destruction throughout both the magical world (the Old Kingdom) and a world like ours (Ancelstierre).

THE CHARACTERS
Sabriel is the main character.  She’s 17/18 years old and heir to the title Abhorsen. At the start of the book, she’s hardly traversed in Death and is horribly inexperienced in dealing with the Dead.  She frees Touchstone from the bow of a ship, where he had been stuck as a figurehead. Touchstone’s problem was the first she felt she could deal with herself.  At first, Touchstone’s servant-attitude annoys her, but once he lightens up and acts more like himself, Sabriel admits that she “thinks she loves him”.

Touchstone is the ‘bastard’ son of the Queen.  Originally living 200 years before the book takes place, he grew up with his brother, Rogir.  However, when treachery occurs in the Royal House, and the Queen and her two daughters are killed, Touchstone is frozen and imprisoned as a figurehead of a ship in Holehallow. After Sabriel frees him, he is unable to speak of the events occuring 200 years before because of a spell. Touchstone is also slightly mad, and when pressured he tends to go crazy. Sabriel is the only person who can ‘cure’ him and calm him down.  He is the first to admit that he loves Sabriel. (“I love you,” he whispered. “I hope you don’t mind.” - Touchstone, page 435, Sabriel)

Their Children are named Ellimere and Sameth.  Ellimere takes over the royal duties, after having little skill with putting down the dead.  So, this leaves Sameth as the Abhorsen-in-Training.

THEIR RELATIONSHIP
Sabriel and Touchstone admit to loving each other near the end of Sabriel.  We find out in the next book, Lirael, that they have married and have two children.  In Abhorsen, the two seem to love each other still, and take care of each other.  Touchstone worries horribly over Sabriel and her skirmishes with the Dead. However, in Lirael and Abhorsen, there is very little elaboration on the relationship between the Abhorsen and her husband, and from the brief moments in these last two books in the trilogy, it may only be assumed that their relationship is happy and healthy.

THE KISS
Sabriel does not actually kiss Touchstone to free his trapped spirit from the figurehead, but always ‘helpful’ Mogget makes the suggestion that she “has to start kissing someone sometime”, and the implications of the scenario COULD be considered as foreshadowing. Later, however, Sabriel does kiss Touchstone to prevent him from succombing to Astarael’s powerful tune. This kiss works, and both Sabriel and Touchstone are able to hold onto life and resist the raging waters of Death.  [Everyone who hears Astarael should go far into Death, including the ringer.] This moment marks a turning point in which Sabriel and Touchstone become slightly more open about their feelings and concern for each other. {{Webmistress’ personal opinion: I love this part of the book; it’s very dramatic and well-written.}}

OLD LAYOUTS

Layout 1 - cover of Sabriel. Very blue. I really liked this layout but it didn’t involve Touchstone or any aspect of relationship-y type stuff, so it had to go.  Sigh.
